GENEALOGY

The Dictionary of American Family Names claims that Blanton is an English name meaning "Dweller at a homestead at the end or on a point; or at the horse farm."  According to the Encyclopedia Virginia Biography, Volume IV by Lyon G. Tyler (1915), "The surname Blanton is traced back to the fifteenth century and is a corruption of the ancient Scotch border family name Ballantine, the evolution being through Ballantine, Blantine, Blanten to Blanton."  The earliest known Blantons came from the area of Lancashire, in the northwest region of England.  The Ballantine family, and therefore the Blanton family, are a sept of the Scottish Clan Campbell.  Following this rationale, Thomas William Blanton, III registered the Blanton family tartan (#6181), a modified Campbell tartan, with the Scottish Tartans Authority in 2004.  This tartan can bee seen at the top and left side of this website and, unlike the rules governing heraldry, can be worn and used by anyone with ties to the Blanton family.  Another version of the Blanton tartan can be found at the Tartans of Scotland website.
